SR Live Talk Part 3: Why is communication important and what various forms of communication are there?
The importance of communication in our everyday life is obvious: in communication, we find a way to exchange and interact with each other. We communicate to create understanding. This is the primary purpose.
But, that is unfortunately only the ideal way of communication, so to say – if it works. But there are so many ways in which communication has the possibility to fail. And that comes back to us, to how we interpret, and last but not least, to who we are.
But let me for completeness, just quickly mention the different forms of communication: there are words, there is tone, there are gestures, and there is energy. All of this is communication. Words, in fact, are only occupying 7% of the overall communication, so it is very likely that they cannot only create understanding but have a great probability to create misunderstanding.
And this ultimately comes back to humans and human nature. We are interpreting the world based on where we come from and who we are. If we are introverts and people talk to us a lot, we feel frustrated. The same goes the other way round. Not even to mention the differences in why men and women start communication in the first place. This is discussed more in the video below.
So in just these little things I just said, we can see the importance of getting more aware of our communication, and where it can go right and wrong and what we can do to create better communication.
Let me say one thing in advance, and we want to remember that through the whole series: we are all different. And whatever happens, we have to keep this in mind. We are different and this is great because this is where we can continue to grow.
